Small Business Saturday

What does the Saturday after Thanksgiving look like in your circle of friends and family? Are you frantically cleaning up after guests, or are you focused on relaxing and making good use of your leftovers? Either way, when you venture out to grab a coffee or do some holiday shopping, you’ll notice independent retailers celebrating Small Business Saturday. As a family company started over 30 years ago, we know what it means to be independent, even if we aren’t terribly small these days. Here’s the inside scoop on 5 local businesses you can support around our hometown of Grand Rapids.

Woosah Outfitters – Founder Erica brought her inspiration from the Michigan outdoors to a bespoke collection of art and apparel. Pick up an original piece of Woosah artwork or just go for the ice cream. Insider tip: dogs are encouraged.

Ferris Coffe + Nut – Give them the gift of caffeine with Ferris’ Winter Avenue Brew. A local favorite, check them out next time you need an espresso or cold brew.

Happy Cat – As a registered animal shelter, Happy Cat houses kitties ready for their forever homes. You can help socialize them for their future parents, or you might end up falling in love. Either way, you’re sure to appreciate a visit to this happy spot. *At the time of publication, private reservations are required.

Blandford Nature Center – Play outdoors (snowshoes optional) on one of Blandford’s many trails or bring your kids to a playscape. As an independent non-profit, their operations are supported by generous patrons looking to experience and learn more about our beautiful state. Plus, their farm offers a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program to get fresh batches of seasonal crops directly to you.

Books & Mortar – Newer to the Grand Rapids scene than others on this list, Books & Mortar stands out with a wide selection of fiction and non-fiction. Plus, they have a rewarding loyalty program for the dedicated bookworms in your life. Insider tip: skip the lines at bigger stores and buy your greeting cards here – the sixth one is free when you buy five.
