Spring Pet Safety Tips

As our Michigan weather warms up (finally!), a new set of challenges to pet safety emerge. Here are a few things to keep an eye out for:

Fleas, ticks and other bugs – as the ground defrosts, particularly in sandy soil, flea & tick eggs will start to hatch. Now might be a good time to start flea & tick treatments that will start working in spring and last for the next 6 months.

Flowers – Many flowers are poisonous to pets, such as poinsettias, daffodils, tulips, lilies and more. You can see a full list at: https://www.aspca.org/…/animal-p…/toxic-and-non-toxic-plants

Holidays – With Easter coming up, keep an eye on the chocolate around the house. Chocolate can make your dog very sick, and quickly. Also keep pets away from Easter lilies and poinsettias.

Antifreeze – There are puddles and potholes everywhere. Pets can get very sick by drinking from these, especially anywhere that antifreeze puddles up.

Allergies – Pets can have many of the same allergies that humans have. Ask your vet for help diagnosing and treating seasonal allergies.

Heat – It may not feel hot outside, but it doesn’t take long for the sun to turn the heat up in our cars. Leaving a pet in an unattended car can put their life at risk, and in short time.

Food & water – Now that pets are playing outdoors for longer stretches of time, consider making canned food a part of their diet, it’s a good source of protein and can help to hydrate. Also have drinking water available to them inside and when they’re outdoors.

Mud & Dirt – Okay, mud and dirt may not be a direct safety hazard, but muddy paw prints on the carpet and grime on the furniture can strain family relations – not to mention a dirty bathtub and towels from washing your dog at home. Try our super convenient Self Serve Dog Wash rooms, available at all Chow Hound Pet Supplies stores. We have everything you need – towels, convenient wash tubs (to save your back), shampoo, conditioner, air dryers, even treats – to walk out with a sparkling clean, sweet-smelling pooch.
