Help Prevent Dog Bites

Dog Bite Prevention Tips

From our Friends at the Humane Society of West Michigan:
Although dogs are our friends, dog bites do happen. According to AVMA, more than 4.5 million people are bitten by dogs each year, children being the largest group. Dogs can bite for many reasons such as lack of socialization, improper care, or feeling provoked. May 15-21st is National Dog Bite Prevention Week and we, at Humane Society of West Michigan, want to help prevent dog bites by giving you some important tips:

For children:
Always ask for permission from a pet’s parent before petting a dog
Never approach a dog who is eating, sleeping or nursing puppies
Never approach an injured animal
Don’t poke, hit, pull or tease a dog
For dog owners:
Never leave a child unattended with a dog
Teach children that dogs deserve respect and to never play with them in a rough manner
Always walk your dog on a leash when in public
Never put your dog in a position where they feel threatened
Make sure your dog is socialized young so it feels more comfortable around other people and dogs
Please share these tips and remember to always be cautious around dogs you don’t know!
